Start with your
instructor’s office hours

Course tutoring takes place through scheduled virtual sessions with instructors. Check your syllabus and course announcements in Classter for office hours and appointment instructions. Student Support can help when you cannot find the information or need assistance arranging access.

Types of Academic Support

Tutoring and academic support help enrolled NMU students understand course material, practice academic skills, and prepare for assessments. The Office of Student Support Services organizes access to assistance and learning resources. Academic Affairs oversees subject expertise and instructor-delivered tutoring. Support includes scheduled virtual office hours and instructional resources in Classter, NMU’s learning management system.

Course tutoring can help you understand a reading, apply a theory, follow a problem-solving process, or identify why an attempted solution is incorrect. Statistics and research-methods support addresses course-related procedures, assumptions, terminology, and interpretation. An instructor may demonstrate a calculation with practice data, explain how a variable relates to a research question, or discuss what a statistical result means.

Study-skills support can address reading strategies, note-taking, assessment preparation, and a workable study schedule. Ask for assistance when a difficulty becomes apparent so that you have time to practice before the next assignment or assessment. Identify the particular concept, skill, or step you need help understanding.

  • Course concepts. Identify the reading, theory, or application you need explained.
  • Statistics. Specify the calculation, assumption, or output you want to understand.
  • Research methods. Name the design, procedure, or methodological question involved.
  • Study skills. Ask about reading, note-taking, organizing study, or practicing a skill.
  • Assessment preparation. Identify the topics to review and the practice you need.

Request Tutoring

Begin With Your Course Instructor

For a current course question, open the course in Classter and review the syllabus and instructor announcements for office hours, contact information, and meeting instructions. Follow the stated appointment procedure. If the schedule or access instructions are missing, use the course contact information to ask the instructor for a tutoring appointment.

Explain the topic and the help you need. Identify the course unit, question number, page, or procedure involved. For example, explain that you can calculate a result but do not understand how to interpret it. If you cannot begin an assignment, identify the instruction or concept that is unclear.

Ask Student Support for Coordination

If you cannot locate your instructor’s contact details, need help arranging access, or need support beyond a single course question, email info@newmeridianuniversity.org with the subject Tutoring Request. Include your full name, student ID if assigned, program, course title or code, instructor, and the topic you want to review.

Describe what you have tried and where you became stuck. Include any assignment or assessment deadline and two or three possible meeting times with your time zone. Attach the relevant instructions, rubric, or a brief excerpt of your attempted work when it helps explain the question. Sharing an assignment gives the instructor context for teaching; you remain responsible for completing it.

  • Name the course and the specific point you do not understand.
  • Show your attempt or explain what prevents you from starting.
  • Include your deadline, available meeting times, and time zone.

Scheduling and Availability

Appointments depend on instructor availability and the subject assistance needed. A proposed meeting time is not a confirmed appointment. Check the scheduling response for the date, time, time zone, meeting link or access method, and preparation instructions. Ask about missing details before the appointment. If office hours conflict with your schedule, explain the conflict and ask about another available arrangement. Student Support can coordinate with Academic Affairs when additional subject expertise is needed.

Some programs may apply tutoring usage limits during peak terms. Any applicable limit is published in the program’s tutoring information. Check that information when arranging repeat sessions. If a limit affects your request, tell Student Support the course, topic, and help still needed so that available resources or further arrangements can be identified.

To cancel or reschedule, reply to the appointment confirmation as soon as you know you cannot attend. Include the original appointment date and time and your availability for another session. After a missed meeting, contact the instructor to arrange another available time. Confirm the replacement arrangements, including whether a new meeting link is required.

  1. Check office hours and any published tutoring limits.
  2. Request a time and offer alternatives with your time zone.
  3. Confirm the date, time, meeting link, and preparation instructions.
  4. Reply promptly if you need to cancel or reschedule.
  5. Contact the instructor to arrange another time after a missed meeting.

Prepare for a Session

Review the relevant material and attempt the work before the session when possible. Have the instructions, your notes, your attempted solution, and specific questions available. Open any course-required software or learning materials so you can follow the explanation and practice. You do not need a finished solution to ask for help; identify what you understand and the point at which you need instruction.

Choose a manageable goal. You might focus on understanding one statistical assumption, applying a theory to a case, or planning how to study for an assessment. If several topics need attention, identify the most urgent difficulty and discuss the order with the instructor. A session may address part of a larger task, with further reading or practice needed afterward.

Use practice data for research or statistics questions when possible. Remove identifying information from material you share. Do not send passwords, participant names, contact details, confidential workplace records, or other protected information with a tutoring request. Explain the learning question without disclosing material you are not authorized to share.

  • Review the material and attempt the work when possible.
  • Bring the instructions, notes, attempted work, and specific questions.
  • Prepare required software and remove identifying information from shared material.
  • Choose the most important question or skill to address.

What Happens During Tutoring

Tutoring is instructional. The instructor may ask you to explain your current understanding, identify an error in your reasoning, demonstrate a process, and then ask you to apply it to a similar problem. Say which step you cannot follow and ask questions when an explanation is unclear. The goal is to understand the reasoning and perform the work independently after the session.

An instructor may examine your work to understand the difficulty and explain the relevant concept. In statistics or research methods, this may involve discussing why a procedure is appropriate, how its assumptions are examined, or what an output means. You conduct your own analysis, verify the results, and write the interpretation. Tutoring does not provide a completed analysis, research section, or answer to submit as your own.

  • Explain your thinking and show where you became stuck.
  • Ask about any step you do not understand.
  • Practice the method and complete your own work.

Practice and Follow Up

Apply the explanation to a new practice example or the portion of an assignment you are permitted to complete independently. Review your notes and check whether you can explain the reasoning yourself. Record any remaining question with the step or concept involved. If you still need help, reply to the scheduling email with what you practiced, what you now understand, and what remains unclear.

For another appointment, name the topic and include your updated attempt or question. Explain whether you are continuing with the same difficulty or raising a new one. If problems affect several courses, tell Student Support which courses are involved and whether the difficulty concerns course content, study time, or access to materials. Course sequencing and progression questions belong with your assigned academic advisor.

Use the Resources in Your Course

Classter contains course-specific walkthroughs, study guides, and recorded demonstrations. Review the resources identified in your course or recommended during tutoring. Pause a demonstration to practice the steps yourself, compare your approach with the explanation, and note where you need further help. If you cannot find a relevant resource, email with the subject Academic Support Resources and include the course, topic, and type of explanation you need.

If your request involves several areas, describe each need in your tutoring email. Student Support can help coordinate the appropriate course instruction, writing feedback, and research assistance.

Academic Responsibility and Service Limits

Tutors do not complete assignments, correct assessed work for submission, or supply assessment answers. You may ask for an explanation of feedback on completed work and practice the underlying skill. Any permitted revision or resubmission remains your responsibility. If an examination, quiz, qualifying assessment, or assignment restricts outside assistance, obtain the instructor’s permission before requesting tutoring on that work and provide the instructions describing the restriction.

Course requirements, grading decisions, and research approvals remain with the responsible instructor or committee. For dissertation work, distinguish a question about understanding a method from a request to approve the study’s design or analysis. Your supervisor or committee must resolve the approval question. If tutoring guidance appears inconsistent with course instructions or committee feedback, share the exact wording and ask the responsible instructor or supervisor to clarify before changing the work.

Tutoring does not guarantee a particular grade, completion of an assignment in one session, or approval of a proposal or dissertation. Requesting help does not reserve an immediate appointment or extend a deadline. Continue meeting course participation and submission requirements while a request is pending. Ask your instructor directly for any extension, identifying the assignment, the difficulty affecting completion, and the extension requested.

  • Complete your own assignments, analyses, and revisions.
  • Obtain permission before seeking help on restricted assessments.
  • Ask your instructor or committee to resolve conflicting guidance and approval questions.
  • Meet course requirements and request any extension from your instructor.
