Start with the
question you have

You do not need to know which office is responsible before contacting Student Support. Describe what you need to accomplish, the difficulty involved, and any approaching deadline. If several services are involved, the office can coordinate the next steps.

About the Office

The Office of Student Support Services coordinates assistance with the practical and academic demands of online study. This includes orientation, writing development, tutoring, library and research assistance, accessibility, and student success planning. The office also helps students report technology problems and reach the university official responsible for an academic, registration, financial, or other administrative question.

Support may involve a written explanation, feedback on your own work, a virtual discussion, an instructional resource, or a referral. The appropriate arrangement depends on the service and the issue. If a request crosses several areas, Student Support helps identify who is responsible for each part and follows up until the handoff is established.

Orientation serves admitted students. Writing, tutoring, library assistance, and ongoing academic support serve enrolled students. Prospective students may ask about support and accessibility before applying. Returning and former students may contact the office for questions or referrals relevant to their circumstances.

Each service page explains its scope, how to request assistance, what to prepare, and any service-specific requirements.

Beginning Your Program

New Student Orientation

Orientation is required for admitted students and must be completed by the end of the first week in the program. It introduces course navigation, university policies, academic integrity, communication, assignment submission, and available support. It also gives you an opportunity to practice using Classter, NMU’s learning management system, before those tasks become part of regular coursework.

Follow the orientation page for access instructions, required activities, and completion confirmation. If an activity does not record correctly or a completion-related hold remains, Student Support helps investigate; the Office of Student Admissions and Records maintains the official record and applies or removes the required hold.

Developing Your Writing

Writing Center

The Writing Center provides feedback on organization, paragraph development, clarity, scholarly tone, paraphrasing, source integration, and citations. A consultation can help you identify where an argument needs development, where evidence is missing, or how a reader may understand a passage.

Prepare your own draft, assignment instructions, relevant instructor comments, and specific questions. You make the revisions and remain responsible for the submitted work. Writing support does not include composing sections, rewriting papers, or replacing an instructor’s or dissertation committee’s review.

Understanding the Material

Tutoring and Academic Support

Tutoring addresses course concepts, statistics, research methods, study skills, and assessment preparation. Assistance may involve explaining a method, working through a practice problem, interpreting an example, or identifying a more effective approach to studying a difficult topic.

For a question about your current course, begin with the instructor. Student Support coordinates additional assistance and scheduling with the instructor or appropriate academic personnel; Academic Affairs oversees subject expertise. Bring the relevant instructions, your attempted work, and the point you do not understand. Tutors provide explanation and guided practice while you complete your own assignments.

Finding and Evaluating Sources

Student Library

The Library Resources page brings together research databases, repositories, scholarly discovery tools, and publishing platforms. Research assistance can help you refine a question, choose keywords, build searches, evaluate relevance and publication type, and locate available full text.

Sign in with the university credentials supplied for access. A resource listing does not establish that NMU provides paid subscription access, and discovery results may include material that has not been peer reviewed. For search assistance, bring your topic, the searches already attempted, and the difficulty encountered.

Using University Systems

Technology Support and Help Desk

Information Technology handles account access, authentication, password resets, Classter access, and technical problems with university-supported platforms. Student Support helps you report the issue and follow up when it remains unresolved.

Identify the system, attempted action, exact error, time, device, browser, and steps already tried. If coursework is affected, notify the instructor separately and ask about the required submission or deadline arrangement. Technical support cannot approve an extension, change a grade, repair personal equipment, or recover lost personal files.

Access and Participation

Accessibility and Accommodations

Students may request an accommodation when a disability-related barrier affects courses, materials, assessments, communication, or university systems. Requests are considered individually in relation to the activity and barrier. You may also report inaccessible content or a problem with an approved adjustment.

Begin by describing the activity, access difficulty, and date assistance is needed. You may ask for help identifying an adjustment. Do not attach medical records to the general email; the office will explain any documentation needed and the appropriate submission method. The service page also explains implementation, follow-up, and decision review.

Planning Your Next Steps

Student Success

Student Success support helps when workload, missed assignments, stalled research milestones, or competing responsibilities affect participation. You can ask for help before a difficulty becomes an academic standing issue. An instructor may also refer a concern for discussion.

A discussion may lead to an individual plan identifying tasks, responsibilities, target dates, services, and a review date. The plan helps you track progress and outstanding decisions. Extensions, changes in enrollment, and academic standing decisions remain with the authorized instructor or office.

Arrange Assistance

The Request Student Support page helps you choose an email subject and identifies the details needed for each service. If you are unsure, email info@newmeridianuniversity.org with the subject Student Support Inquiry. A form is not required, and you may ask for assistance before all supporting material is available.

  1. Explain the request. Include your name, student ID if assigned, program, affected course or service, and the answer or action needed.
  2. Identify the timing. Give any deadline with its date, time, and time zone. For a meeting, suggest two or three available times.
  3. Confirm the arrangement. Check the coordinating contact, appointment details or written-review instructions, and what to prepare. You may request an accessible communication method.
  4. Keep the response. Retain the message and any reference number. Confirm the next action and when to expect an update.

Use your university email when possible. If it is inaccessible, write from the personal email associated with your application or student record and explain the access issue. Call 801-306-0660 if email is unavailable. A request does not confirm an appointment or approve a change to a course requirement.

Questions for Other Offices

Student Support Services helps you reach the responsible contact when a question requires an official decision. Use an established contact when you already have one. Otherwise, describe the issue and ask Student Support to connect you with a named person.

Instructors and Academic Affairs
Course instructions, feedback, grades, and extensions begin with the instructor. Degree planning, course sequence, and academic progression involve the assigned advisor or Academic Affairs.
Office of Student Admissions and Records
Application documentation, eligibility, admission decisions, registration, transcripts, enrollment verification, and official student records. A hold may also require action by the office that imposed it.
Student Financial Services
Tuition, fees, payment arrangements, account balances, and refunds.

A referral explains who receives the inquiry and whether you need to make a separate formal submission. Student Support continues coordinating until the receiving office confirms responsibility. A referral itself does not change an amount due, an enrollment record, or a deadline.

Follow-Up and Formal Requests

Response periods depend on the service and applicable policy. Check the relevant service page and ask for the next expected update when the reply does not specify one. Follow up in the existing message thread with the original request date, reference number, unresolved question, and approaching deadline. If a correction is reported, check that the problem has actually been resolved.

For a complaint or appeal, clearly identify the incident or decision, state the review requested, and follow the governing procedure. A clearly expressed complaint or appeal sent to the wrong NMU office must be forwarded promptly with its original receipt date and applicable deadlines preserved. A general question about appeal options does not itself file an appeal.

The formal requests and complaints guidance explains routing and follow-up. Ethical concerns follow the Office of Ethical Compliance process. For a sensitive concern, ask for the designated reporting contact before sharing details.

Contact and Privacy

Include only information needed to explain the request. Do not send passwords, verification codes, full payment-card details, medical records, identity-document copies, or identifiable research participant information to the general inbox. Ask for the approved protected submission method if sensitive records are necessary. The university may verify your identity before discussing private records or changing account access.
