International Students

Complete your doctorate from your home country. NMU’s 60-credit programs combine online coursework, faculty mentoring, and dissertation research, with no travel to the United States required.

Students in most countries pay $500 USD per three-credit course.

International admission

NMU accepts applications from graduates of institutions outside the United States. Your qualifications are reviewed for equivalency and authenticity.

Prior education
A master’s degree from an accredited institution.
Academic record
A graduate GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or its equivalent, for full admission.
Minimum age
18 years old at enrollment.

If your university uses a different grading system, submit your official academic record with grades as issued by your institution. NMU reviews international qualifications for equivalency. Conditional admission may be considered under university policy.

Qualifications earned abroad

Submit official graduate transcripts and documentation of your completed master’s degree in the language in which they were issued. NMU handles the translation needed for its admissions review.

You do not need to arrange your own translation. Admissions will advise you if an independent credential evaluation is needed.

English proficiency

If your previous education was not conducted in English, provide evidence of English proficiency. This may include an approved assessment, a degree taught in English, or other verifiable documentation. The Academic Committee reviews waiver requests.

Admissions can explain which documents, assessments, and scores apply to your application.

Study from your home country

Coursework is asynchronous, so you can access materials and complete assignments without attending daily lectures on a U.S. schedule. Each course has deadlines and academic requirements.

Faculty mentoring continues through coursework, candidacy, and the dissertation. Arrange meeting times with your instructors and include your time zone when scheduling.

You will need a computer and reliable internet access. NMU’s website provides faculty information, library resources, and the program requirements from admission through graduation.

Using your degree in your country

NMU is registered as a degree-granting postsecondary school in Utah and accredited by QAHE. State registration is not academic accreditation. NMU does not hold institutional accreditation from an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Before enrolling, establish whether an NMU doctorate meets your intended purpose with the employer, university, professional body, or qualification authority that will evaluate it. Recognition and transfer credit decisions are made by the receiving organization.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are grades assessed if my university uses a different grading scale?

NMU reviews your official academic record against its admission requirements. Submit grades as issued by your institution, whether reported as percentages, degree classifications, or another numerical scale.

Admissions will advise if additional information is needed to assess your qualifications.

Do I need an English test if my master’s degree was taught in English?

An English-medium degree may provide evidence of proficiency. Tell admissions the institution, degree, and language used for teaching and assessment so it can explain what documentation is needed.

Waiver requests are reviewed by the Academic Committee. If a test is required, confirm the accepted assessment and score requirements before booking it.

What if my academic documents are not in English?

Submit your official academic documents in the language in which they were issued. NMU handles the translation needed for its admissions review. You do not need to arrange your own translation.

Can I keep working while I study?

Asynchronous coursework lets you decide when to study within the course schedule. It still involves assignments, deadlines, research, and faculty meetings.

Before enrolling, discuss the expected workload and meeting arrangements with NMU so you can decide whether the program fits your work and family commitments.

Will I have to attend meetings at U.S. times?

Coursework does not require daily attendance at U.S.-scheduled lectures. Faculty appointments are arranged separately. Provide your city or time zone and discuss suitable meeting times with your instructor.

If your work schedule limits your availability, raise that before enrolling so you can confirm the arrangements you need.

Is $10,000 USD the full amount I should budget?

At $500 USD per three-credit course, $10,000 USD covers the standard 60-credit program’s tuition before discounts. Application, registration, and graduation fees add $270 USD.

Your country’s applicable rate, discount eligibility, and any late payment or repeated-course charges affect the amount you pay. Confirm your tuition and fees before enrolling.

Will another university accept my NMU credits?

Each receiving university decides whether to accept credits and how they count toward a program. Admission to NMU does not establish transfer eligibility elsewhere.

If future transfer matters to you, ask the receiving university to review NMU’s accreditation status and the relevant course information before you enroll.
