Who can apply

Already a doctoral candidate?

The ABD pathway is available only to students who reached formal doctoral candidacy at another institution. Completing coursework alone does not establish eligibility.

Admission is available in designated NMU doctoral programs and depends on academic alignment, research readiness, and qualified supervision.

  1. Formal candidacy has been granted

Your official academic records must establish doctoral candidate status. If the transcript does not show it, an authorized academic official at your previous institution must confirm it.

  2. Only the dissertation remains

All required non-dissertation coursework and examinations at your previous institution must be complete. Applicants who have not reached this stage cannot enter through the ABD pathway.

  3. Your prior study fits the NMU degree

Your previous doctoral study must be in the same or a closely related discipline. Its institution must have held recognized home-country accreditation when the coursework was completed and candidacy was granted. Preparation must satisfy NMU’s non-dissertation requirements apart from the two examination courses.

Transfer coursework must meet the policy requirements. Courses must have been completed within five years before your NMU start date, with a grade of B or higher or a verified equivalent. Pass/fail credit requires official evidence that the passing standard was equivalent to B or higher.

Any remaining coursework deficiency beyond the two NMU examination courses makes an applicant ineligible for this pathway. You must also meet the University’s doctoral admission requirements.

Your first courses at NMU

Two examinations to confirm your preparation

Each course section enrolls one student and is administered and evaluated by the Chief Academic Officer. Both include written and oral examinations and are graded Pass or Fail.

Research preparation

Research Methods Qualifying Examination

Demonstrate doctoral-level knowledge of research design, sampling, data collection, analysis, and research ethics. Explain and justify methods suited to your proposed dissertation.

Disciplinary preparation

Subject Matter Qualifying Examination

Demonstrate command of the theories, scholarship, current research, and debates in your discipline. Show knowledge beyond your dissertation topic and explain the contribution your study could make.

Before each course begins, you receive the scope, requirements, deadlines, and passing criteria. Both courses must be passed before NMU confirms candidacy and you begin the dissertation sequence.

One retake is permitted per failed course. Both written and oral components must be repeated. A second failure in either course results in dismissal from the ABD pathway, subject to the University’s appeal procedures.

Work you have already completed

Your dissertation receives an individual review

Proposals, chapters, and research materials

You may submit existing work for review. The NMU chair and committee identify what can be retained, what needs revision, and what cannot be used. An approved proposal from another institution must still complete NMU’s proposal review and approval process.

Previous dissertation credits do not transfer. Acceptance of earlier work does not waive required NMU dissertation enrollment, credits, the defense, or final approval.

Existing data and ethics approval

Prior ethics approval does not automatically carry over. NMU’s Institutional Review Board reviews the applicable records and permissions before human participant research begins or resumes for the University dissertation.

Using existing data requires documentation of collection, required approvals, consent conditions, and your authority to access and use the data.

How the pathway works

  1. Submit your application

Provide academic records, candidacy verification, and available research materials. Copies may be used for preliminary review.

  2. Receive an individual decision

NMU reviews academic fit and supervision. Before enrollment, an approved applicant receives a completion plan and written cost estimate.

  3. Complete both examinations

Pass the research methods and subject matter courses to confirm NMU candidacy and enter the dissertation sequence.

  4. Complete the dissertation

Work with your committee through proposal review, required ethics approvals, research, defense, and final manuscript acceptance.

Prepare your application

What to submit

In addition to standard admission documents, prepare the following ABD materials.

  • Transcripts covering all previous doctoral study and evidence of formal candidacy, completed coursework, and required examinations.
  • A current résumé or CV and a statement explaining your transfer, research interests, dissertation status, and any enrollment interruption or dismissal.
  • Your most recent proposal or chapters, formal proposal approval if available, and committee feedback. If you have no proposal, submit a doctoral writing sample and brief research description.
  • A summary of completed research and applicable ethics approvals if research has begun. Additional materials may be requested during review.

Common questions

Before you apply

Can I apply if I completed coursework but never advanced to candidacy?

No. This pathway requires formal doctoral candidate status at your previous institution. Coursework completion alone does not qualify. Review general admission requirements for other doctoral entry options.

Do I need an approved dissertation proposal to apply?

No. If you have not developed a proposal, submit a doctoral-level writing sample and a brief description of your intended research. Any existing proposal is reviewed under NMU standards.

Will I have to start my dissertation again?

That depends on the review. Acceptable portions of earlier work may be retained, but admission does not guarantee acceptance of a topic, proposal, chapters, or data. Your committee documents what can be used and what revisions are required.

How long can I take to finish?

The policy allows a maximum of seven years from first enrollment in NMU’s ABD pathway, subject to applicable Satisfactory Academic Progress limits. Your plan sets individual milestones and an anticipated schedule. Continuous enrollment is required unless approved leave applies. Additional enrollment can increase the total cost.

Can interrupted enrollment affect my eligibility?

You must explain any interruption or previous dismissal. Voluntary withdrawal or expiration of the previous institution’s completion period does not automatically disqualify you. All eligibility, academic alignment, and transfer-course requirements still apply.
