Your academic background
Full admission requires a completed master’s degree, the minimum graduate GPA, and preparation for doctoral coursework. NMU reviews your academic records and readiness for online study.
Your master’s degree must be completed before you apply. A degree that is still in progress does not meet this requirement.
Your master’s degree must be from an institution accredited by an accrediting agency recognized in the institution’s home country. NMU reviews the institution and degree during the admissions evaluation.
Full admission requires a GPA of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale for the master’s degree used to establish admission eligibility. NMU assesses records that use other grading systems through the credential evaluation process.
Faculty review your academic preparation, prior performance, and ability to study independently. Meeting the minimum GPA does not guarantee admission.
Copies are accepted for the initial application review. Before admission is confirmed and coursework begins, NMU must receive the required official records, verify your credentials, and confirm that you meet the English language requirements.
Qualifications earned abroad
If your degree was earned outside the United States, submit your academic records as issued, including the original grades, course information, and degree details. NMU assesses percentages, degree classifications, and other grading systems for equivalency. Do not convert the grades yourself.
NMU arranges any English translation needed for its admissions review. After a provisional offer, qualifications earned outside the United States require a World Education Services (WES) evaluation with ICAP. Follow the instructions in Admissions Documentation.
Language of instruction
NMU’s doctoral programs are taught in English. Applicants must provide evidence that meets the University’s English language requirements.
Evidence may include an accepted proficiency test or documentation of qualifying prior education taught in English, subject to NMU review. Review the accepted tests, minimum scores, and submission instructions before arranging an assessment.
Online doctoral study
Doctoral study requires time, consistent participation, and reliable access to learning resources. Consider these practical expectations alongside the admission requirements.
Be prepared to read scholarly work, write at the graduate level, and develop research skills through coursework. Standard doctoral admission does not require a completed dissertation proposal.
Set aside time for assignments, course deadlines, and regular communication with faculty. Asynchronous study offers flexibility within a course schedule and requires consistent participation.
You will need reliable internet access and a computer suitable for coursework, research, document preparation, and faculty meetings. Be prepared to use NMU’s learning systems.
Additional circumstances
Conditional admission, doctoral transfer credit, and ABD admission have separate requirements. Each request is reviewed under the applicable University policy.
For a master’s GPA of 2.75 to below 3.00
Applicants with a master’s GPA of at least 2.75 and below 3.00 may be considered for academic conditional admission. The GPA must come from the degree used to establish admission eligibility. GPA values are not rounded upward to meet the minimum.
Conditional admission is not guaranteed and does not waive degree, credential verification, or English language requirements. The written offer specifies the approved courses, required academic performance, and deadlines.
For completed doctoral coursework
You may request evaluation of up to six semester credits of completed doctoral coursework for eligible NMU electives. Courses must meet NMU’s accreditation, equivalency, minimum grade, and recency requirements.
Admission does not guarantee transfer credit. The transfer review must be completed before your first NMU course begins. Separate transfer provisions apply to ABD admission.
For applicants who attained doctoral candidacy
ABD applicants must have formally attained doctoral candidacy at their previous institution and completed all non-dissertation coursework and qualifying requirements. Only dissertation coursework may remain. The prior discipline must be the same as or closely related to the NMU program, and suitable supervision must be available.
Admitted ABD students must pass NMU’s Research Methods Qualifying Examination and Subject Matter Qualifying Examination courses before entering the dissertation sequence. Each course is administered individually by the Chief Academic Officer.
When you are ready
Review the required documents and application steps before you apply. NMU makes admission decisions after academic review and credential verification. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an offer.
Before you apply
Your master’s degree must be completed before you apply. You may contact Admissions before completing your degree to discuss the requirements and plan your next steps.
Submit your academic records with the original grades. NMU assesses records that use percentages, classifications, or other grading systems through the credential evaluation process. Do not replace your original grades with a self-calculated GPA.
A master’s GPA of at least 2.75 and below 3.00 may be considered under the Conditional Admission Policy. GPA values are not rounded upward. A GPA below 2.75 does not meet the minimum for this route. Consideration does not guarantee admission.
Previous doctoral coursework alone does not establish ABD eligibility. You must have formally attained doctoral candidacy, completed all non-dissertation coursework and qualifying requirements, and have only dissertation coursework remaining.
