Conditional Admission

NMU may consider applicants with a qualifying master’s GPA of at least 2.75 and below 3.00 for conditional admission. Conditions may also address specific gaps in academic preparation. If admitted, you will receive a letter listing your approved courses, required grades, and deadlines.

2.75

Minimum qualifying master’s GPA

A GPA of at least 2.75 and below 3.00 may be considered. Values are not rounded upward.

6 credits

Approved, completed semester credits

Letter-graded NMU degree coursework in the approved conditional sequence.

B or higher

Required in every course

Subject only to the expressly approved one-course repeat exception in Section 14.

Meeting the minimum GPA does not guarantee admission. To reach full admission, you must earn a conditional-review GPA of at least 3.00, meet every condition in your letter, and receive written University approval.

Eligibility

Degrees, GPA, and preparation

The Academic Committee reviews your academic record and interviews applicants considered for conditional admission.

Completed degrees

You must be at least 18 and already hold the required bachelor’s and qualifying master’s degrees. Each awarding institution must be accredited by an accrediting agency recognized in its home country. International qualifications must meet NMU’s equivalency requirements.

Academic preparation

Conditional admission may address a qualifying master’s GPA below 3.00 or a specific weakness in subject knowledge, academic writing, quantitative reasoning, or research methods. A GPA below 2.75 is ineligible. Applicants with a GPA of 3.00 or higher may receive conditions when another weakness in preparation is identified.

Interview and admission decision

The Academic Committee may request a writing sample or skills assessment in addition to the interview. It recommends any academic conditions. The Chief Academic Officer makes the final admission decision.

After an offer

How conditional admission works

Your letter explains what must be completed before enrollment and which requirements apply during your initial coursework.

01 / BEFORE ENROLLMENT

Verify your credentials

Accept your offer in writing. NMU must approve your official academic records, identity, degrees, any required international evaluation, and English proficiency evidence or waiver before you begin degree coursework.

02 / CONDITIONAL STUDY

Complete approved coursework

Complete six approved, letter-graded semester credits within six calendar months of starting approved coursework, subject to the policy’s leave, extension, and appeal rules. Each final grade must be B or higher, subject only to the Section 14 exception. Your conditional-review GPA must be at least 3.00; original graded attempts remain in that GPA.

03 / ACADEMIC REVIEW

Receive written confirmation

Once final grades and required evidence are available, the Committee reviews your results. The Chief Academic Officer issues a decision within 10 business days. Your status changes to full admission only after written confirmation.

Take only the courses approved in your conditional plan. Enrollment beyond six completed degree credits requires written confirmation of full admission or expressly authorized continuation.

Dates and deadlines

When requirements are due

Check the exact dates in your offer. Business days are Monday through Friday, excluding published University holidays and official closures.

15 calendar days

Accept the complete conditional offer in writing within 15 calendar days after issuance.

10 business days before start

All required pre-enrollment verification must be received and approved at least 10 business days before the scheduled start.

6 calendar months

Complete the initial academic conditions within six calendar months of the first actual approved course start, subject to the policy’s leave, extension, and appeal rules.

One approved deferral may move the start by no more than 90 calendar days from the original scheduled start. Both request and approval must occur before the verification deadline. A permitted ordinary extension is limited to 30 calendar days. Requests alone do not change deadlines or authorize enrollment.

01Purpose and scope

New Meridian University may grant conditional admission to a doctoral program after an individualized review when an applicant demonstrates potential for doctoral study but requires further evidence of academic readiness. Conditional admission is exceptional. Meeting minimum eligibility criteria does not create an entitlement to admission.

Each conditional offer must identify the specific deficiency to be addressed and establish measurable requirements for conversion to full admission. Conditions must be appropriate to the applicant’s preparation and the academic requirements of the program.

02Admission status

A provisional offer requires an applicant to complete credential verification and other pre-enrollment requirements. A provisional offer does not authorize registration in degree coursework.

Academic conditional admission permits a student to enroll in a limited, approved course sequence after all entry requirements have been verified. The student remains in conditional status until the University confirms full admission in writing.

An offer may contain both pre-enrollment requirements and enrolled academic conditions. The offer must distinguish between these requirements and explain when enrollment is authorized.

03Minimum eligibility and GPA assessment

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and must already hold the bachelor’s degree and qualifying master’s degree required for admission. Degrees must be awarded by institutions accredited by an accrediting agency recognized in the institution’s home country. International qualifications must satisfy the University’s credential evaluation and equivalency requirements.

Full admission ordinarily requires a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale in the qualifying master’s degree, or an approved equivalent. Applicants with a qualifying master’s cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 and below 3.00 may be considered for academic conditional admission. Applicants with a GPA below 2.75 are ineligible.

The University evaluates the complete academic record of the qualifying master’s degree. When a calculation is necessary, the GPA is credit-weighted and includes documented graded repeat attempts. Pass/fail coursework is excluded from the numerical GPA. Transfer coursework is counted once using the original academic record. GPA values are not rounded upward to meet an admission threshold.

International academic standing is assessed through an approved credential evaluation. Other graduate academic records may be reviewed as evidence of readiness, but they do not replace or raise the GPA of the qualifying master’s degree.

04Grounds for conditional admission

Conditional admission may address a GPA deficiency, limited subject preparation, or an identified weakness in academic writing, quantitative reasoning, research methods, or another competency essential to the program. An applicant who meets the ordinary GPA requirement may be conditionally admitted when another specific readiness deficiency is identified.

The deficiency must be limited and capable of being remedied through a realistic academic plan. Applicants must be denied admission when their weaknesses are substantial or the available evidence does not support a reasonable likelihood of success.

05Review and decision authority

The Academic Committee reviews the application, documents its assessment, and recommends any proposed conditions. Applicants considered for academic conditional admission must complete an interview. The Committee may also require a writing sample, skills assessment, or other evidence relevant to the identified deficiency.

The Chief Academic Officer has final authority over conditional admission decisions, the initial approved course sequence, academic extensions, and conversion to full admission. Any delegation of this authority must be documented in writing.

06Written conditional plan and offer acceptance

The written offer must state the reason for conditional admission, every requirement to be met, acceptable evidence, exact deadlines, the approved courses and sequence, required grades, registration restrictions, the responsible monitoring official, the review process, and the consequences of failure.

Any required preparation must be described by content, completion standard, deadline, cost, and credit status. Additional charges must be disclosed before the applicant accepts the offer.

The applicant must accept the offer in writing within 15 calendar days after issuance and acknowledge the complete conditional plan. An unaccepted offer expires and is not automatically renewed.

The offer must separately identify the acceptance deadline, pre-enrollment verification deadline, and scheduled course start. These dates must allow a feasible period for compliance. Acceptance does not extend a verification deadline or authorize enrollment.

Conditions may be changed only through an authorized written decision. Verbal assurances do not modify the offer or its requirements.

07Pre-enrollment verification and deferral

Required official academic records, identity verification, degree verification, international credential evaluation, and English proficiency evidence must be received and approved at least 10 business days before the scheduled course start. Scans and photocopies may support the initial application review but do not satisfy final official verification requirements.

Applicants must provide a World Education Services evaluation with the International Credential Advantage Package when required by the University’s documentation instructions. English proficiency must be established through accepted evidence or an approved waiver before enrollment in degree coursework.

An applicant who has accepted an offer may request one deferral. Both the request and approval must occur before the verification deadline. The Chief Academic Officer may approve a deferral for documented exceptional circumstances or verification delays outside the applicant’s control.

The deferred start must occur no more than 90 calendar days after the original scheduled start. Required verification must be completed and approved at least 10 business days before the deferred start. A deferral request alone does not extend a deadline, preserve an offer, or authorize coursework.

An offer expires when the verification deadline is missed without an approved deferral. A second deferral requires a new application and admission review.

08Initial academic requirements

A conditionally admitted student must complete six semester credits of approved, letter-graded NMU degree coursework with a conditional-review cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 and no final grade below B, subject only to the expressly approved repeat exception in Section 14.

The Chief Academic Officer designates the courses and sequence according to the program and identified deficiency. Course substitutions require prior written approval. The six completed credits and other academic conditions must be satisfied within six calendar months of the first actual approved course start, subject to the leave, extension, and appeal provisions of this policy.

All final grades in approved degree coursework undertaken while in conditional status, including replacement and repeated courses, are included in the conditional-review GPA. A grade below B fails the individual-course condition even when the cumulative GPA is at least 3.00, except for the specific original grade expressly covered by an approved Section 14 appeal.

A successfully completed course counts once toward the six-credit requirement. A repeated course does not award duplicate degree credit. Transfer credit, prior learning assessment, pass/fail coursework, independent study, and preparatory modules do not satisfy the six-credit requirement. Where plus/minus grades are used, B-minus is below the minimum.

09Required preparation and degree credit

The Academic Committee may recommend preparatory work, and the Chief Academic Officer must approve its content and completion standards. Preparation necessary for an initial course must be completed before that course begins. Any assigned preparation must be available through an approved means before it is required.

Preparatory work does not count toward the six-credit conditional requirement. It earns degree credit only when expressly included in the approved curriculum. Successfully completed, approved doctoral coursework in the conditional sequence counts toward the degree. Any additional charge for preparation must be disclosed before offer acceptance.

10Registration restrictions and monitoring

A conditionally admitted student may register only for the approved course sequence. Enrollment beyond six completed degree credits is prohibited until full admission is confirmed in writing or continuation is expressly authorized under this policy.

The assigned academic advisor monitors progress after each course, reports the student’s status to the Chief Academic Officer and Academic Committee, and requires the advising contacts specified in the conditional plan.

After a condition has failed, the student may not begin a new course while an adverse decision or appeal is pending.

11Withdrawals, incompletes, leave, and extensions

A withdrawal or incomplete does not satisfy the requirement for six completed, graded credits and does not reset the completion period. Following one ordinary withdrawal, a replacement course may be taken only with written approval from the Chief Academic Officer before replacement enrollment. It must fit within the existing deadline unless a separate extension is approved. A second ordinary withdrawal constitutes failure of the conditional plan.

Withdrawals attributable to approved leave, approved accommodations, or University course cancellation are governed by the applicable University policy and do not independently constitute failure under the ordinary-withdrawal rule.

Time covered by formally approved leave is excluded from the conditional completion period. The Chief Academic Officer must issue a revised written schedule and return deadline.

The Chief Academic Officer may approve one extension of no more than 30 calendar days for documented serious illness, a family or personal emergency, military obligations, or a University-caused delay. Ordinary workload, difficulty with assignments, and poor planning are not sufficient grounds.

An extension changes the time available for completion. It does not waive a grade below B, lower the required GPA, or authorize repeated attempts.

12Conversion to full admission

A student does not submit a new application for conversion to full admission. The Academic Committee reviews completion of the conditional plan, and the Chief Academic Officer issues the decision within 10 business days after all final grades and required evidence are available.

Full admission is granted only when every condition has been satisfied, including the requirements of any approved continuation agreement. The University provides written notice and updates the student’s admission record.

If a condition remains unmet, the notice must identify it and state whether an extension or other authorized action is available. University processing delays are not treated as student failure and do not consume an authorized completion period. Any continuing registration restrictions must be explained.

13Failure to satisfy conditions

A provisional or conditional offer lapses or may be rescinded when it is not accepted on time or pre-enrollment requirements are not completed, subject to an approved deferral.

An enrolled student who fails an academic condition is subject to dismissal and the appeal process in Section 14. A final grade below B may trigger this decision before six credits have been completed. There is no entitlement to an additional probationary period or an automatic course repeat.

The written decision must identify the unmet condition, supporting evidence, proposed effective date, registration restrictions, and exact appeal deadline. Tuition, refunds, withdrawals, and academic record treatment are governed by the applicable University policies.

14Appeals and limited continuation

An applicant or student may submit an appeal to the Office of the President within 10 business days after issuance of the written adverse decision. The appeal must identify the decision being appealed, the grounds, and available supporting evidence.

Permissible grounds are a procedural error, an incorrect academic record, new verifiable material information, or documented exceptional circumstances affecting completion. Disagreement with the decision or a desire for another opportunity is not sufficient.

The President reviews the appeal unless the President participated in the original decision. In that case, an uninvolved official or committee must conduct the review.

Within three business days after receipt of a timely appeal, the reviewing office must identify any missing documentation in one consolidated written request. The appellant has five business days after issuance of that request to provide the documents. If the deadline is missed, the appeal is decided on the available evidence. University-held records must be obtained internally.

The final written appeal decision must be issued within 15 business days after receipt of the timely appeal. Requests for additional documents do not reset or extend this decision period.

Dismissal is stayed during the initial 10-business-day filing period and, if a timely appeal is filed, until the appeal decision is issued. New course enrollment remains prohibited. Courses already underway may continue pending a timely appeal; a denial notice must specify how those courses will be treated.

An admission appeal does not change an academic grade. A challenge to grading must follow the separate grade appeal procedure.

An approved appeal may permit one repeat of one course under a written continuation agreement. Approval requires documented grounds and a mathematically feasible plan for attaining a conditional-review GPA of at least 3.00, including the original graded attempts, within the permitted continuation.

The agreement must expressly identify the original below-B grade covered by the exception. That original grade remains on the transcript and in the conditional-review GPA. It ceases independently to defeat the individual-course B requirement for that course only if the approved repeat earns a grade of B or higher. All other approved conditional degree courses must earn at least B.

Another grade below B, including a grade below B in the approved repeat, results in dismissal. No additional repeat or performance extension is permitted. Continuation for the repeat is limited to one additional course term, and the written appeal decision must designate the permitted offering and final deadline.

Additional courses may not be taken solely to raise the conditional-review GPA. A repeat does not guarantee conversion to full admission. An original grade is removed from the GPA calculation only through an official grade correction. A repeated course counts once toward the six completed credits and earned degree credit.

An appeal cannot waive the minimum incoming GPA, degree eligibility, identity verification, official academic documentation, or English proficiency requirements. Verified record corrections and corrections of procedural errors remain available.

For this policy, business days are Monday through Friday, excluding published University holidays and official closures. All notices must state exact calendar dates for applicable deadlines.

15Records and consistent administration

The University retains the application review, academic recommendation, admission decision, accepted conditional plan, verification evidence, monitoring records, extension or leave decisions, appeal records, and final admission outcome.

Criteria must be applied consistently, and all conditions must be communicated before the applicant accepts the offer. Approved leave, accommodations, and privacy matters are administered under the applicable University policies.

The catalog, admissions materials, and offer letters must consistently reflect the 2.75 minimum qualifying master’s GPA, six completed semester credits, minimum course grade of B, limited repeat exception, designated decision authority, and deadlines established by this policy.
